SC forms panel to probe 99 mining leases in Bellary
New Delhi: The Supreme Court’s forest bench on Friday constituted a joint committee to examine the nature of operations in 99 iron ore mining leases in Karnataka’s Bellary district.
The court had suspended mining in 19 lease areas last week, and has now asked the new committee to determine whether any lease holders named in the 2008 Lokayukta report or the recent CEC report, were actually indulging in illegal mining.
Of the 99 leases in question, 68 have been named in the Lokayukta report.
The joint committee is to comprise of officials from the state’s forest department, geology department, Lokayukta’s office and the mining lease holders.
