SC dismisses petition against Narendra Modi’s nomination papers
The petition had claimed that Narendra Modi's nomination papers for 2012 state assembly election were incomplete
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition which claimed Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s nomination papers for the 2012 state assembly election were incomplete.
A two-judge bench headed by the Chief Justice P. Sathasivam rejected the petition filed by a social activist, Suneil Sarawgi, who wanted the court’s intervention to initiate action.
“Political rivalry," the bench declared, “cannot be taken up in a PIL (public interest litigation)".
In his 2012 nomination papers from Maninagar constituency, Modi did not disclose the name and details of his spouse.
“The columns pertaining to spouse and dependants were left blank...thereby concealing the marital staus", the petition said.
As the chief election officer had looked into the matter and given his decision, the apex court did not feel the need to look any more into the issue.
In a recent decision, the Supreme Court empowered the returning officer to reject nomination papers of candidates who do not disclose complete information in their nomination papers.
