New Delhi: Union information and broadcasting minister M.Venkaiah Naidu has expressed concern over the Pakistani channels being aired illegally in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and hence, asked the state government to stop the transmission.

According to a senior official who did not wish to be named, channels from countries like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are being illegally transmitted by local cable operators in the valley and are spreading ‘anti-India’ propaganda.

This move comes after Naidu met J&K chief secretary B.B. Vyas on Friday. “There have been reports of some Pakistani and Saudi Arabian channels being aired in J&K which is in violation of the law. The minister expressed concern over this and has asked J&K government to stop this immediately" said the official cited above.

The J&K government has also been asked to take action against erring cable operators and submit a compliance report at the earliest.

According to the list of permitted private satellite TV channels as on 31 March released by the ministry, a total of 888 channels are authorized to air their content across the nation.

Last year, the government had cracked down on Islamic preacher Zakir Naik’s free-to-air channel Peace TV which was said to have inspired Bangladesh terror attack on a cafe.

The I&B ministry had asked local cable operators, multi-system operators (MSOs) and direct-to-home platforms to stop the broadcast of all television channels that are not permitted to be aired. The government had also asked the state governments to take action the against cable operators who continued to show unauthorised TV channels.

Recently, the ministry had requested the department of space (DoS) to block the signals of an unauthorized direct-to-home service called Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS) Ltd which is said to be providing free-to-air channels in India without permission from the ministry.

State broadcaster Doordarshan’s direct-to-home platform DD Free Dish is the only free-to-air satellite television service in India.

ABS Ltd is a global satellite operator headquartered in Bermuda. I&B ministry is the licensing authority for DTH broadcasting services in India.
