Govt to hold discussion on recommendation of panel on IIMs

New Delhi: The government will hold discussion on the recommendation of the review committee on the functioning of IIMs which has submitted its report.

“The committee, headed by R C Bhargava, has submitted the report. The government considering the recommendations," a senior official MHRD said.

Bhargava had earlier said that the committee was not in favour of any change in the fee structure in the elite Indian Institutes of Management. The fees should be finalised by the concerned IIM boards, he said.

The IIMs have already hiked their fees from this year. IIM Ahmedabad had announced steepest increase of 175% in the fees of its first year post-graduate programme from the Rs2 lakh to 5.5 lakh. Similarly other IIMs have increased their fees.

The committee’s mandate was to study the functioning and suggest roadmap on how to create excellence and expand management education.

The committee was constituted by the government after a period 15 years. The last committee was set up in 1992. Prior to 1992, a similar committee was set up in 1977 on the agenda of studying whether the IIMs need to take up more activities or if any organisational changes were required.

The recommendations are expected to address issues like dearth of skilled manpower faced by industry and raising of funds from other sources by the IIMs.
