Need to act with sense of urgency on global warming: Rajnath Singh
The World Environment Conference, which started on Saturday, focussed on issues like air pollution, water pollution, economics and clean technology, and the role of courts and tribunals
New Delhi: India wants the world to act with a sense of urgency and prepare a comprehensive, equitable and durable action plan to tackle global warming and climate change, with the country on course to exceeding its climate change commitments, two central ministers said.
“The well-being of humanity, the environment and functioning of the economy, ultimately depends upon judicious and responsible management of the natural resources available on this planet. The humanity cannot keep on guzzling far more natural resources than what the Mother Earth can sustainably provide," home minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday.
“We should adopt ways and means to conserve the existing ecosystems and expand degraded ecosystems – in people-friendly ways," he told the World Environment Conference organized by the National Green Tribunal.
Minister for coal, power, new and renewable energy and mines Piyush Goyal, who was also present, highlighted India’s massive renewable programme to protect the environment.
“All the commitment and promises (made) at Paris (Climate Agreement) will not only be met but exceeded," Goyal said.
The power minister also referred to the country’s plans to go big on electric vehicles, which he said would save the exchequer about $100 billion annually.
The two-day conference, which started on Saturday focussed on issues like air pollution, water pollution, economics and clean technology, and the role of courts and tribunals.
