New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday came down heavily on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government for not resolving the water crisis with Haryana directly.

A bench comprising chief justice T.S. Thakur and justice U.U. Lalit issued a notice to the Centre and Haryana, and also asked the Haryana government to submit a status report on the situation in Munak canal within two days.

In the aftermath of protests by Jats seeking reservation in Haryana, Munak canal was damaged on Friday, triggering a water crisis in the national capital.

The Delhi government on Saturday moved the top court, seeking directions to the Centre and Haryana to resolve the crisis. The court was also informed on Monday that the Delhi government is not in a situation to supply water to embassies in the capital.

Justice Thakur did not take it well when advocate Rajeev Dhawan, representing the Delhi government, told the case must be treated with seriousness as AAP minister Kapil Sharma was present in the court. “We cannot even visit the canal site in Haryana as we have jurisdictional issues," Dhawan told the court.

“If this is a case of differences between Delhi and Haryana government, then we will not interfere," Thakur said, threatening to dismiss the case.

“The minister must be trying to resolve the problem instead of being in court," he added.

Dhawan, however, managed to persuade the bench to monitor the actions taken by Haryana and the Centre in resolving the water crisis. However, the Haryana government assured the court that the Army has taken control of the canal and repair works are underway.
