Manhattan: The National Security Agency’s collection of bulk telephone data is illegal, a federal appeals court said on Thursday.

In throwing out a lower-court decision that backed the NSA, the US Court of Appeals in Manhattan didn’t decide on the constitutionality of the programme, saying only that the agency overstepped the authorization provided by the Patriot Act. Bloomberg
