Centre’s appeal challenging end-use of cancelled coal blocks in Odisha
The Supreme Court will hear an appeal brought by the Centre which challenges the end-use of two coal blocks—Utkal B1 and B2 coal blocks in Odisha.
Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) had contended in the Delhi high court that change of end-use of these blocks from steel and iron to power had prevented them from bidding for them.
The two blocks in Odisha and Gare Palma IV/6 block in Chhattisgarh were earlier alloted to JSPL but were cancelled along with 214 blocks by the apex court and later, when re-auction was announced, their end-use was changed from steel and cement to power.
On 20 July, the court had ordered maintenance of status quo on the three coal blocks. Read more.
SC to hear anticipatory bail of activist Teesta Setalvad
The top court will hear a case of anticipatory bail filed by activist Teesta Setalvad and husband Javed Anand in relation to an embezzlement charge levelled against them for siphoning off money from the donations collected for the construction of a memorial for the 2002 Gujarat riot victims at Gulbarg Society.
Unitech-buyers dispute
The SC will hear a plea against National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission’s order asking real estate firm Unitech to refund the money to homebuyers for failing to give them possession of flats under its project.
On an earlier occasion, Unitech had expressed its inability to refund money to the homebuyers over its two delayed projects in Noida and Gurgaon. Read more.
Prius-Toyota trademark dispute
Prius Auto Industries has appealed before a two-judge bench of the Delhi high court, against a July decision against it. A single-judge decision had found Prius Auto and its sister concern infringing on Toyota’s trademarks. The court had levied a penalty of ₹ 10 lakh on them and restrained them from using these trademarks. Read more.
Coal scam: Rathi Steel promoters move high court against conviction
The Delhi high court is also set to hear appeals filed by the promoters of Rathi Steel Pvt. Ltd—Pradeep Rathi and Udit Rathi—and its additional general manager Kushal Agarwal against their conviction and sentencing orders in a coal scam. The special court had found them guilty of criminal conspiracy and cheating. Read more.
Mahyco Monsanto’s trademark infringement case against Nuziveedu Seeds
Bt cotton seed major Mahyco Monsanto Biotech Ltd’s plea against Nuziveedu Seeds for infringing its trademark and selling seeds beyond the period of licence will be heard by the Delhi high court on Monday. Earlier, the court had restrained Nuziveedu Seeds from selling seeds manufactured after November 2015 when the licence agreement was terminated. The court had also appointed local commissioners to make an inventory of stocks available with Nuziveedu Seeds. Read more.
