SC dismisses plea seeking CBI probe into Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship issues
A Bench comprising chief justice H. L. Dattu was unhappy with the frivolous nature of petitions filed couched as public interest litigation
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the allegations regarding Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship.
Earlier this month, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy had alleged that Gandhi had declared himself a British citizen for floating a private company in London from 2003 to 2009.
One cannot hold the citizenship of another country while holding Indian citizenship.
A Bench comprising chief justice H. L. Dattu and justice Amitava Roy was unhappy with the frivolous nature of petitions filed couched as public interest litigation (PIL).
“A time may come when anybody who’s a little sensitive will start filing (cases)," Dattu said.
The chief justice also asked the lawyer, M. L. Sharma, how he got hold of the documents that were being relied upon for proving the alleged fraud.
