Delhi poll: High stakes

What is at stake for Delhi and national politics in case of a BJP or AAP win, or a hung assembly

Delhi assembly election results will be announced on Tuesday. Mint shows what is at stake for Delhi and national politics from the possible scenarios that could arise from the election that turned out to be largely a two-horse race between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

BJP wins

Delhi: Returns to power after 1998

National politics: Increases political footprint, fifth consecutive win for the party after general elections

AAP wins

Delhi: First non-Congress, non-BJP government with full majority

National politics: Big jolt for BJP, could provide a boost to stronger regional parties in other poll-bound states.

Hung assembly

Delhi: Parties will scout for alliances, depending mainly on independents and defectors if any.

National politics: Political instability to continue in Delhi, which has no elected government for over a year.
