It is widely known that China has taken a big lead over India in the race out of mass poverty. The two Asian giants began to tentatively open up their economies at around the same time, when Deng Xiaoping took control of his country in 1979 while Indira Gandhi was voted back to power by the Indian electorate a year later. But how far ahead is China right now? Mint has tried to quantify the gap between the two countries in terms of the number of years separating them, by looking at when China was at the same level as India is right now on various parameters. China is about three decades ahead on most social indicators, one decade ahead when indicators of income are considered, while the two countries are almost on a par on digital parameters. The upshot: the large gap between the Chinese and Indian economies is perhaps easier to close in the coming decade than the massive gap between them in terms of social indicators.
