Jammu: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday said it will oppose the resolution moved in the state assembly by an independent MLA seeking mortal remains of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and hoped that its coalition partner Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will support them.

“We are sure that PDP will support us and we both will oppose it (resolution on Afzal Guru)" BJP state spokesman Sunil Sethi told reporters. Independent MLA from north Kashmir’s Langate constituency Sheikh Abdul Rashid had on Wednesday said that he had moved two resolutions in the assembly including seeking return of mortal remains of Afzal Guru.

“Through media we have come to know that engineer Rashid is moving a resolution in the state assembly demanding that Afzal Guru’s remains be shifted to the valley. He has tried this earlier also and failed, this is just for publicity and to instigate the people in the valley," he added.

He said that after the initial hiccups between the coalition partners following the release of hardline separatist Masarat Alam, both the ruling partners would show close coordination.

“The coalition partners will face such situations and we are sure that PDP will support us and will oppose it," he said. He said that Afzal Guru was hanged following the law of the land as he was a convicted terrorist, “Afzal Guru was a terrorist involved in attack on the Parliament, any move that would create disturbance in the Kashmir would be strongly protested by both BJP and PDP," he said.

When asked to comment on the reports that the state government was contemplating to release more political prisoners he said, “the state home secretary has made it clear that government will not release anybody, when both the parties will sit and form a coordination committee, then it would decide on who the political prisoner is and who not."

On a question why the coordination between the two ruling partners was not visible earlier he said, “Earlier during Masarat Alam’s release if it was not visible it will get visible in the future."
