No conspiracy to ‘unwarrantedly convict’ Mohamed Nasheed, says Maldives

New Delhi: The Maldives government has said there is no conspiracy to “unwarrantedly" former President Mohamed Nasheed to prevent him from participating in politics.

“In fact, he contested the last Presidential elections in late 2013, while the case was on-going. This amply proves that there are no conspiracy theories to eliminate him from the political arena," the Maldives High Commission in New Delhi said in a statement that is dated 23 March but received by media organisations by email on Tuesday.

The letter, of which Mint has a copy, said in the last few days there has been a lot of “speculation and misrepresentation" of facts regarding the recent developments in the Maldives and added that the missive aimed at setting the record straight—giving details of the arrest, prosecution and subsequent sentencing of Nasheed.

The letter pointed out that Nasheed, like any Maldivian citizen, had been entitled to a transparent and impartial trial in accordance with the laws of the constitution.

“We also wish to inform that the Government of Maldives has invited the United Nations Secretary General, the Commonwealth, Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights and the European Union to depute experts to observe the appeal process of the former President," the statement said.

It added that the Maldivian government could not interfere nor influence any decision of the prosecutor general or the judiciary.
