New Delhi: Pakistani officials and media has been running its own narrative on the arrest and subsequent handing of the death sentence to Kulbhushan Jadhav who has been described as a spy working for Indian security agencies and engaged in hostile activities against their country.

There is unanimity within Pakistani establishment and the media on this. Not only that, recent reports are blaming India for a missing Pakistani army officer from Nepal.

Here’s what Pakistan is saying on Kulbhushan Jadhav:

■ Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif: “Cooperation rather than conflict and shared prosperity instead of suspicion are the hallmark[s] of our policy. Pakistan, for its part, will never hesitate to extend the hand of friendship to all and shall never waver from returning goodwill with even more goodwill."

■ Defence Minister Khawaja Asif: “The death sentence to Indian spy Kulbushan Yadav was followed in accordance with due process of law. The law of the land was applied and the trial in question went on for three months. We have done absolutely nothing that’s against the rules and regulations but there is premeditated murder going on even today in Kashmir."

■ Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing: “The spy was tried through Field General Court Martial (FGCM) under the Pakistan Army Act (PAA) and awarded the death sentence. Today Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa confirmed his death sentence awarded by FGCM."

■ Lt Gen Asim Bajwa: “His (Jadhav) goal was to disrupt development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), with Gwadar port as a special target. This is nothing short of state-sponsored terrorism... There can be no clearer evidence of Indian interference in Pakistan. If an intelligence or an armed forces officer of this rank is arrested in another country, it is a big achievement."

■ Pakistan foreign office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria: “We have brought Lt. Col (r) Muhammad Habib Zahir ‘s case to the Nepali government’s attention. The Indian prime minister admitted that the country was involved in dividing Pakistan in 1971."

■ Pakistan High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit: “We have sufficient evidence against Jadhav and have shared it with the Indian government. He was involved in sabotage and terror. Jadhav has been visiting Pakistan since 2003 using an original Indian passport but with a fake name."

■ Dawn: “The conviction for spying and sabotage of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav has the potential to inflict lasting harm on bilateral relations if not handled sensibly. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has done the right thing by publicly clarifying that the death sentence against Jadhav will not and cannot be carried out quickly. Already, however, there are indications that the decision to put Jadhav on trial may have elicited a response by India. The recent disappearance of a retired Pakistani military officer in Nepal in murky circumstances suggests that the spy wars between India and Pakistan are spiralling in unpredictable directions."

■ The Express Tribune: “Kulbhushan Yadav alias Hussein Mubarak Patel is a man the Indian media has been looking for. The arrested Indian citizen personifies counter-terror policy of Ajit Kumar Doval, India’s National Security Advisor and a proud spymaster. For the opposition parties, Kulbhushan offers a good reason to attack Modi government’s handling of the case."
