New Delhi: Well-known faces of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including banker Meera Sanyal and activist Mayank Gandhi, are in the first list of probable candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, according to an initial list released on Thursday. The list shows that the maximum number of applications are from the Congress-ruled states of Maharashtra and Haryana.

Sanyal, a former chief executive officer of Royal Bank of Scotland, had unsuccessfully contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from the Mumbai South constituency. This year too, Sanyal, who joined the AAP this month, has sought nomination from the same constituency, the seat of Union minister Milind Deora of the Congress party. Gandhi, who has been associated with the anti-corruption movement and the party since the beginning, is likely to contest from Mumbai North West constituency.

The AAP has not yet decided on final candidates for any constituency and is seeking public opinion on the initial list, which will be updated from time to time depending on the acceptance of applications. It has not made any name public yet on the Congress bastion of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, where its leader Kumar Vishwas has been campaigning against Rahul Gandhi, Congress vice-president and sitting lawmaker.

The initial list does not have any names from the southern states of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and none from the Northeast.

The party, which held a meeting of its national executive on Thursday, discussed the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. “Criminalization of politics and corruption will be two of the biggest issues that will be raised by the AAP," Sanjay Singh, a member of the national executive, told reporters at the end of the meeting.

The party will hold its national council meeting on Friday to firm up its plan for the general elections due by April-May.
