Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut does U-turn on Muslim voting issue

Mumbai: Just a couple of days after he called for taking away the voting rights of Muslims, senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, on Tuesday, took a U-turn. “I merely suggested if rights of Muslims are taken away, masks of the so-called secularists will fall apart," he said.

He said this while speaking to reporters in Aurangabad which is heading for a civic poll on 22 April, according to Marathi news channel ABP Majha. “Taking away rights of Muslims will not be only wrong but unconstitutional, I am from the media, I know how it works, media is always in search of sensational news, so it twisted my statement and flashed it," he said.

Raut, a member of Rajya Sabha, is executive editor of Sena mouthpiece Saamna and penned the controversial article.

Raut and his party had drawn flak after he wrote such a move would end vote-bank politics which stands in the way of development of Muslims.

Shiv Sena’s ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had distanced itself from this stand. Union urban development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu told reporters on Monday in New Delhi that even such a suggestion for the sake of a discussion is unacceptable to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

However, Shiv Sena has taken a defiant stand. In Tuesday’s Saamna, it poses a counter question: “How many of those who are worried about voting rights of Muslims [have] spoken about Kashmiri Pundits, who have not [been] able to exercise their right of franchise for more than two decades?"
