Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Tuesday approved Bayer AG’s proposed buyout of Monsanto. Bayer AG’s buyout of Monsanto has been approved by Competition Commission of India(CCI). Post the approval on 23 June, Monsanto will become a subsidiary of Bayer. A probe on initiated on the deal by EU which suspected it would limit competition in Europe. Bayer would acquire Monsanto for $66 billion. It be the largest all-cash transaction on record. The Bayer-Monsanto deal will be the largest ever involving a German buyer

Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy will take oath as Karnataka’s chief minister on 23 May. He is heading a JD(S)-Congress coalition government. Congress leader G Parmeshwara will be sworn in as the deputy CM. The combine was invited by governor Vajubhai Vala after BJP’s BS Yeddyurappya quit on 19 May minutes before a floor test as the party could not muster the required majority.

BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa resigned as chief minister of Karnataka on May 19 ahead of a Supreme Court-mandated floor test in the state assembly. His resignation came two days after he was sworn in. The apex court had ordered the trust vote on a petition by the Congress and the JD(S) who had challenged governor Vajubhai Vala’s decision to inivte Yeddyurappa to form government. The governor had also given the BJP leader 15 days to prove majority. BJP had emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats in the May 12 elections.

Demonetisation and GST rollout impacted Patanjali as well, says MD Acharya Balkrishna, adding that the firm will do better next year. Some analysts are asking whether Patanjali is approaching the limit of its long growth expansion. They attribute the slowdown in sales growth to rivals catching up with competing products and Patanjali’s inability to handle the expansion. Sachin Bobade, an analyst with Mumbai-based Dolat Capital Market, believes consumers of Patanjali, especially in the urban areas, shifted to other brands because of quality issues.

Following the Karnataka election results throwing up a fractured mandate, 16 May has proved to be a day of fast-moving political developments. Both the BJP and the Congress held meetings in the morning. BS Yeddyurappa met the state governor to stake claim after being elected leader of BJP legislature party. The Congress-JD (S) combine, which has also staked claim to form government, accused the saffron party of indulging in horsetrading. All eyes are now on governor Vajubhai Vala to see what happens next.

North Korea has put a question mark on the 12 June summit between Kim Jong Un and US president Donald Trump. The North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on 16 May also said in a statement that Pyongyang had suspended high-level talks with South Korea. The reason for North’s action are the ongoing military exercises between Seoul and Washington that Pyongyang has long claimed are invasion rehearsals.
