If you are panning on buying gaming console, here are some of the options available in the market
Playing games on a console is fun and addictive. It is also a lot more affordable compared to PC gaming. You can get the latest Sony PlayStation (PS) or Microsoft Xbox for less than ₹ 30,000. However, a powerful gaming laptop will easily cost you about ₹ 80,000. Gaming consoles don’t have a screen of their own and have to be connected to a TV screen or monitor. But most homes have a TV screen, so you don’t have to pay separately for them. Also, accessories such as game controllers are bundled with the pack.
Here are some of the game consoles that are available in India and why you should or should not buy them.
Microsoft Xbox One S
Rs 29,990 onwards
The Xbox One S is an upgraded version of Xbox One. It will be available in two storage variants— 500GB and 1TB (Rs 34,990). What separates the Xbox One S from the earlier Xbox One is its smaller footprint. It is 40% smaller than the predecessor. The console supports HDMI 2.0, HDR (High dynamic range) and 4K upscaling, which means you can upscale 1,920x1,080p games in 3,840x2,160p resolution. The console is compatible with all Xbox One games and is powered by the same hardware. It will be available in India from 5 October 2017, but users can pre-order it right away.
Sony PS 4 Slim
Rs 27,830 onwards
Like the Xbox One S, Sony too has a slim and compact version of PS4 and it is called the PS4 Slim. It is available in a 500GB and 1TB (Rs 32,990) storage variants. The biggest advantage of the new console, besides the smaller footprint, is the lower power consumption. According to Sony, its maximum power draw is 165W, less than the PS4’s maximum power consumption of 250W. It works with all PS4 games.
Sony PS4 Pro
Sony PS4 Pro is a more powerful version of the PS4 and is slightly bigger in size too. It supports gaming and movie playback in 4K HDR which makes it more future ready than PS4 Slim. Its maximum power consumption is 310W, which is more than even the PS4. It supports HDMI 2.0 and is powered by AMD’s Radeon 4.2 TFLOP GPU. The predecessor and the PS4 Slim use AMD Radeon 1.84 TFLOP GPU). It is available in a single variant which offers 1TB storage.
Nintendo Switch is a unique gaming console. It comes with a 6.2-inch screen allowing users to play games without a TV screen. However, if you want to play the games on a bigger screen, you can separate the controllers called joycons, put the Switch in dock, and then connect the dock to a TV via HDMI. Switch is not as powerful as any of the consoles in the list, but the flexibility it brings to table makes it hard to ignore. As of now, there are very few games on it. However, Nintendo and major game developers have promised to come up with more games for Switch.
Xbox 360 and Sony PS3
₹ 12,750 onwards and ₹ 22,990
You can get the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 at much lower price. But spending on them is unwise as most game developers have stopped making games for them and the games made for PS4 and Xbox One are not backward compatible. The only games released on Xbox 360 and PS3 this year are Just Dance and PES 2018, which just shows how obsolete they have become.
