Apple event highlights: iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, Apple Watch 4 launched

Highlights from the Apple event in Cupertino where three new iPhones—iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR—and the Apple Watch 4 were launched

Apple Inc. today introduced its largest iPhone ever and a new line of watches that can detect heart problems as it looks to get users to upgrade to more expensive devices in the face of stagnant global demand for smartphones. The relatively small changes to its lineup, following last year's overhauled iPhone X, were widely expected, but still included many firsts. Here are the highlights from the Apple event (all timings in IST):

  • 12.13 am ISTiPhone XS, XS Max and XR: Prices unveiledThe iPhone XR starts at $749 and will be available from 26 October. The iPhone XS will start at $999 and iPhone XS Max at $1,099 and will be available from 21 October. Pre-orders for the iPhone XS and XS Max will start on 14 September.
  • 12.05 am ISTThe iPhone XR cameraThe Apple iPhone XR has a single 12MP wide angle camera at the back with the same ability to change depth-of-field after a photo has been clicked.
  • 12.05 am ISTiPhone XR: Battery lifeiPhone XR has 90 minutes of more battery life than the iPhone XS.
  • 11.59 pm ISTApple iPhone XR unveiled: All the goodies of the iPhone XS but with LCD screen, single cameraThe iPhone XR with 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display has been unveiled. It will have all the features as that of the iPhone XS except an LCD screen and single 12MP wide-angle camera at the back.

Indian cellular providers namely, Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone, will support this. Schriller said the iPhone XS will have two physical SIMs in the Chinese models, but the ISPs suggest it might make its way to India.
  • 11.47 pm ISTDual SIM card support finally comes to an iPhoneiPhone XS will support dual SIM along with dual standby, making it the first smartphone by Apple to have this feature.
  • 11.46 pm ISTiPhone XS has stereo sound recording for audioThe iPhone XS can now record stereo sound along with the existing 4K video recording.
  • 11.44 pm ISTiPhone XS allows you to change depth-of-field after an image is clickedThe new edit slider allows changing of the depth of field after taking a picture.
  • 11.43 pm ISTiPhone XS: Smart HDR mode and new featuresThe iPhone XS now comes with “Smart HDR” feature that allows better dynamic range. The new A12 chipset can capture four frames with zero shutter lag and better shadow detail as well.
  • 11:40 pm ISTiPhone XS: CameraiPhone is “the world’s most popular camera,” Phil Schiller says. The iPhone XS features a 12MP wide angle lens and 12MP telephoto lens, with f/1.8 and f/2.4 apertures respectively. The 7MP front camera has an f/2.2 aperture with a faster sensor.

  • 11.16 pm ISTApple iPhone XS Max unveiledThe Apple iPhone XS Max is the iPhone XS, albeit with a 6.3-inch display, making it the biggest smartphone ever to come out of Cupertino.
  • 11.13 pm ISTSpecifications of iPhone XS displayThe iPhone XS sports a 5.8-inch OLED display with a pixel density of 458ppi and a resolution of 2436x1125. It comes with IP68 certification and three colour variants.

  • 11.00 pm ISTBattery life of the Apple Watch Series 4“The Apple Watch 4 has the same 18-hours battery life that the Apple Watch 3 had,” says Apple’s Jeff Williams.
  • 10.57 pm ISTApple Watch 4 has a fall detectorJeff Williams says Apple Watch Series 4 has a fall detector and can start an emergency call one minute after a fall is detected.
  • 10.53 pm ISTApple Watch 4 comes with an electrocardiogramThe Apple Watch 4 is the first ECG product offered over the counter directly to consumers. It also screens for heart rhythm irregularities that appear to be atrial fibrillation. The feature has also received clearance from the US FDA, which is now working with developers to make apps for the watch.
  • 10.51 pm ISTApple Watch 4: Fitness featuresThe accelerometer and gyroscope power all-day activity tracking and identify swim strokes. Next-gen units with twice the dynamic range can measure up to 32 G forces and 8 times faster sampling.
  • 10.50 pm ISTApple Watch 4 has a ceramic and sapphire crystal backThe back of an Apple Watch Series 4 is made of black ceramic and sapphire crystal. Radiowaves can pass through, increasing cell reception.
  • 10.49 pm ISTApple Watch Series 4: New chipsetThe Apple Watch Series 4 features the new 64-bit dual core Apple S4 chipset, which is twice as fast as the S3 chipset.

It’s 30% larger, allows you to keep the photos of your favourite memories as the watch face and follow the latest sports scores. The digital crown is still here but now has haptic feedback. The speaker is now 50% louder. Jeff Williams calls it the Apple Watch the world’s no. 1 smartwatch.

  • 10.25 pm ISTAirPods and Air Power wireless chargerApple might also release wireless accessories for the new iPhones. The last iteration of AirPods was released way back in 2016 along with the iPhone 7, so we can definitely expect Apple to work on revamp of this. The AirPods were released to accompany the paradigm shift in the connectivity aspect of the iPhone—the loss of the headphone jack. It was the first step to a wireless future.Following that jump made in 2017, Apple might release the much awaited AirPower wireless charger for the new iPhones. It is a solid possibility, since the trio will also come with glass backs and the leaks reveal they’re much thicker than the iPhone X.

The two phones will be powered by Apple’s new A12 chipset that is based on a 7nm process. The overall design is expected to be unchanged. We expect three storage variants of 512GB, 256GB and 64GB of both models, according to the sitemap revealed by Steve Troughton Smith. The iPhone XR will be a more affordable model featuring an LCD screen measuring at 6.1-inches. Even though the processor specifications are not revealed yet, we expect storage variants of 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. (Read more)
