Thinking of trying ChatGPT 1980s AI photo prompt for pics editing? Wait! Are you aware of these privacy risks?

ChatGPT's viral 1980s AI photo trend is drawing users to upload personal pictures for retro edits. But before joining in, users should understand how facial data, photo metadata, model training settings and cloud storage can affect privacy.

The viral 1980s AI photo trend has taken over social media, with users uploading modern photographs and asking artificial intelligence tools to transform them into portrait resembling old film stills, vintage studio photographs and retro family albums.

Why uploading a clear photo can create privacy concerns

The trend has gained particular momentum in India, where users have been experimenting with prompts inspired by 1980s Bollywood, regional cinema and old-fashioned portrait photography. The resulting images often feature dramatic hairstyles, period clothing, warm lighting and analogue film grain.

But while creating a retro AI photograph may appear harmless, privacy experts and digital safety advocates say users should pause before uploading a clear personal image.

How facial data, metadata and AI model training can affect users

A photograph of a person's face is not simply another picture. It can contain biometric information capable of identifying an individual. The risks become greater when an image is uploaded alongside other identifiable details or shared with unfamiliar third-party applications that do not clearly explain how user data is stored, processed or retained. The first issue users should consider is what they are actually uploading.

Original photographs can contain far more information than is immediately visible. Depending on how an image was created and stored, image files may include metadata relating to the device used and, in some cases, location information.

Backgrounds can also reveal personal details, including home addresses, documents, school names, workplace information or other identifying clues.

Cropping a photograph before uploading it can therefore be a simple but important precaution. A tightly cropped portrait reduces the amount of information visible in the frame and limits the chances of unintentionally sharing sensitive objects or documents.

How uploaded content may be used by the AI service

For individual ChatGPT users, OpenAI says content submitted to its consumer services, including ChatGPT, may be used to improve its models unless the user opts out. The company allows users to disable this through its Data Controls by turning off the “Improve the model for everyone” setting.

Users should also understand that disabling model training and deleting an image are separate privacy considerations. OpenAI's policies provide users with controls over how content is used and retained, while Temporary Chats offer another option for conversations that users do not want saved in their chat history or used to train models.

Temporary Chats are deleted from OpenAI's systems after 30 days, according to the company's help documentation.

Simple steps to protect personal photos before using AI editing tools

The broader risk becomes even more significant when people use unknown AI websites or third-party photo-editing applications simply to join a viral trend.

Once an image is uploaded to a third-party server, users should carefully examine the platform's privacy policy and terms of use. They may otherwise have limited visibility into how long the image is retained, whether it is shared with service providers or how it could be processed in the future.

Consent is another important consideration. Users should avoid uploading photographs of friends, family members or colleagues without their explicit permission, particularly when the image contains a clearly identifiable face.

For highly sensitive photographs, offline or local image-editing software may offer a better option because the image does not necessarily need to be sent to a cloud-based service.

The appeal of the 1980s AI trend lies in how easily a modern selfie can be transformed into something nostalgic. But the simplicity of the process can also make users forget what they are handing over.

Before uploading a photograph, it is worth checking the image, reviewing the service's privacy settings, removing unnecessary personal information and deciding whether the photograph needs to be uploaded at all. The retro picture may take seconds to create. The privacy implications deserve more thought.
