Nipa Charagi

National Editor, Mint Lounge Desk

Nipa Charagi has been on the Mint Lounge desk since 2008. She has seen the newspaper transition from a Berliner to its current broadsheet form. Over the years she has mentored young sub-editors and writers, guiding them through the Mint style guide, and impressing upon them the rigours of fact-checking and editing. While her main role involves editing, rewriting and production work, she also writes occasionally. She contributed her first piece for Lounge in 2016, for a travel special themed "Going away, to go home", where she wrote about her ancestral house in Srinagar. She tends to write mostly about Kashmir and its culture, ranging from books to food. She's particularly interested in Kashmiri Pandit rituals and festivities and how they have evolved/changed since the community was forced to leave Kashmir in 1990. She has captured some of these in her stories about "Dejhor", the dangling ear ornament that Kashmiri Pandit women wear; the significance of curd in the Kashmiri culture. She has contributed to the anthology 'Once We had Everything: Literature in Exile', edited by Arvind Gigoo, Siddhartha Gigoo and Adarsh Ajit.
