Somak Ghoshal is currently a Consultant at Mint, writing especially for Mint Lounge, where he has spent nearly a decade shaping the publication’s coverage of books, fine arts and culture. Of late, he has also been writing on organizational behaviour. With a career spanning journalism, publishing and education spanning 20 years, Somak brings a wealth of experience from some of India’s most reputed media houses and global brands. He previously held senior editorial roles at The Telegraph (Kolkata), HuffPost India, and Mint. Beyond the newsroom, he has significant experience in the publishing industry, having worked as commissioning editor for HarperCollins India and Penguin Books India, where he acquired and edited a wide array of award-winning fiction and non-fiction titles.
Somak’s expertise is defined by a deep and scholarly engagement with the literary arts and desire to tell stories that matter. He holds an MA in English Language and Literature from the University of Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship and second MA from Jadavpur University. This academic rigour gives him a unique edge in criticism and reportage. His experience in online education, as Vice President of Learning & Curriculum at upGrad Enterprise, expanded his interests to behavioural change, startups and corporate culture.
Somak is a trilingual reader and writer (in Bengali, English and Hindi) whose intellectual journey was significantly shaped by the intersection of multiple cultures. He brings this background into his monthly column, titled “Rereadings”, on backlisted books, which he writes for Mint Lounge. Somak is also the author of three books for young readers, two of which were published by Pratham Books and one by Penguin Random House India. He loves travelling, classical music, food from around the world and pets.
