Soumya leads Mint's Consumer Economy team, and is based in Mumbai. She has been a reporter for nearly 12 years, covering FMCG, retail, e-commerce, and later media and entertainment companies in India. She has worked across leading newsrooms, starting with an internship at Bloomberg, with stints at Fortune India and the Economic Times. She also conceptualised, launched, and ran a newsletter on the business of media and entertainment named “The Impression” for independent media startup The Signal. This is her second stint at Mint; she previously worked as a daily reporter in the corporate bureau in Mumbai. She rejoined Mint in 2024 as a member of the Long Story team.
Soumya’s biggest stories include in-depth investigations in Patanjali Ayurved, Kishore Biyani’s Future Group, the rise of e-commerce and India’s booming direct-to-consumer ecosystem, and the rapid growth of social media and streaming platforms in the country. She specialises in the intersection of legacy companies and the so-called ‘new age’ firms disrupting India’s consumer economy. Her strength lies in reporting from the ground and combining contrasting points of view to produce nuanced, detailed reports.
Soumya graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from Dartmouth College in 2014.
