Tanay Sukumar is a Delhi-based data journalist and editor, handling critical leadership roles at Mint. His core skills and interests lie in number-crunching, telling engaging stories, building editorial product strategy, and mentoring young journalists and students on data literacy. His top priority as a writer and editor is to tell complex stories in simple, engaging and educative ways.
Since 2021, Tanay has been at the helm of all of Mint’s data-led journalism, across themes and formats. As part of this role, he was the editor of the flagship ‘Plain Facts’ section for nearly three years, leading his team to publish rigorous, analytical stories every single weekday (Monday-Friday). His current role in Plain Facts itself is an advisory one, while he continues to be data editor.
During the entire covid-19 pandemic, Tanay regularly tracked, analysed and wrote about national and global data (and data gaps) about the health crisis. In 2024, he led Mint's cutting-edge analysis of India's electoral bonds data. His work has covered rigorous analysis of several elections as well as government data on poverty and household consumption. He also writes explainers about data itself, often cautioning readers against common misinterpretations. One of Tanay's most notable works yet was a 4,000-word visual story on sleep patterns in India (2025), derived from a months-long painstaking analysis of 10.2 million rows of the Time Use Survey's data.
Alongside, Tanay also handles the role of subscriber engagement editor at Mint, working closely with the editorial, business and product leadership to drive newsroom strategy, multi-format storytelling, and digital product innovation. He is a frequent speaker and trainer on public forums related to data literacy, journalism, and AI adoption in Indian newsrooms, and teaches data visualisation at Xavier's Institute of Communication, Mumbai.
Before joining Mint in 2020, Tanay worked at Cogencis, a financial newswire, and Scroll.in, an online news platform. Earlier, he was a Teach For India Fellow (2013-2015) and during college, founded and edited a popular award-winning satirical website (2009-2013). He holds a postgraduate diploma in print journalism from Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media, Bengaluru.
