Apple is reportedly cutting production targets for its recently-launched mixed-reality Vision Pro headset. As per a report by Financial Times, the company is facing difficulties in producing the complex design of the device.
It says that the iPhone maker is now preparing to make fewer than 400,000 units of the $3,499 device in 2024. Citing unidentified people with direct knowledge of the manufacturing process, the report further adds that Apple has pushed back its plans for a more affordable version.
Two unidentified China-based suppliers of components for the Vision Pro separately said Apple was only asking for enough parts for 130,000 to 150,000 units in the first year, the paper said.
Both suggest a sharp cut from a previous internal sales target of 1 million units in the first 12 months, the FT said.
Apple has unveiled the new Vision Pro headset at its annual developer conference WWDC held last month. The headset features exterior cameras, allowing users to interact with digital content in mixed reality.
As per details, the Vision Pro arrives at the home view, a floating set of icons with Apple’s most used apps, including mail, music, messages, and safari, when users don the headset. Also, the new product doesn’t need controllers or hardware.
It can track eyes to highlight the preferred icon when users look at a particular icon. Apple Vision Pro is powered by the Apple M2 chip which is enabled with a new chip called R1, especially for sensor processing. The product comes with 12 cameras, five sensors, and six mics.
The headset is enabled with an authentication system called Optic ID, which can be paired with a keyboard. Apple claims that it can be used with iris, data is encrypted, and works with Secure Enclave.
Apple Vision Pro is priced at $3,499 and is currently available in the US.
