BJP stalwart and former finance minister Arun Jaitley died on Saturday at AIIMS. He was 66. In a brief statement, the hospital said Jaitley died at 12.07 pm. Jaitley, a lawyer by profession, had been a key member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet in the BJP government's first term. He held the finance and defence portfolios, and often acted as the chief troubleshooter of the government.

Top Congress leaders on Saturday condoled the demise of former finance minister Arun Jaitley, with party chief Sonia Gandhi saying his contributions to public life will be remembered forever. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh, in a condolence message, described him as an eminent lawyer, an excellent orator, a very good administrator and an outstanding parliamentarian. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet, "I am sorry to hear about Mr Arun Jaitley's passing. My condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace."

Former president Pranab Mukherjee said he had visited him a day back and had prayed for his speedy recovery."He was a leader with deep intellect and knowledge, and a voice of reason. He will be dearly missed. My prayers with his family, friends and admirers."

"A remarkable statesman, Jaitley was a passionate cricket follower and will always be remembered as one of the most able and respected cricket administrators," BCCI said in a press release.

CMs remember Jaitley for his easy working style, knowledge

Chief Ministers of several states condoled Arun Jaitley's demise on Saturday, with many of them tweeting and issuing statements remembering the former Finance Minister. Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan said that Arun Jaitley was a different face in the BJP. "He excelled in whatever position he held and his knowledge in various fields helped him hugely. He was a different face in the BJP."

In Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences over the demise of Jaitley. She described him as 'an outstanding parliamentarian and brilliant lawyer' who was respected and appreciated across all the parties.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K.Palaniswami said Jaitley implemented the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime for the welfare of the country. He also put forth his views strongly in Parliament.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said that he was deeply saddened by the death of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. "His thinking, his working style connected him with everyone and also made him matchless. May his soul rest in peace," Thakur tweeted.

In Panaji, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that Arun Jaitley gave a "new direction to the Indian economy". Sawant tweeted.

BJP leaders reach AIIMS

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have started reaching the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Saturday after the demise of of former finance minister Arun Jaitley due to prolonged illness. Among the BJP leaders to have reached the hospital was Baijant Panda who recently joined the party after quitting from Biju Janata Dal (BJD). Speaking to media outside AIIMS, Panda said that the former finance minister had been a guiding light to several leaders. "Extremely saddened by Arun Jaitley passing. He was a renowned leader from his student days, and a titan of our times. Like many, many others, I was privileged to have been mentored by him. I learned enormously from him and deeply admired his ethical leadership style," said Baijayant Panda, senior BJP leader at AIIMS.

Jaitley to be cremated at Nigambodh Ghat on Sunday

Former finance minister Arun Jaitley's mortal remains will be cremated at Delhi's Nigam Bodh Ghat tomorrow, said BJP working President J P Nadda on Saturday.

"From AIIMS Arun Jaitley's mortal remains will be taken to his residence in Kailash colony. His body will be kept there till 10 am tomorrow and from there it will be taken to the BJP headquarters for party workers and the public to pay their last respects. His final journey will begin from BJP headquarters to the Nigambodh Ghat, where last rites will be performed," Nadda told reporters. He, however, added that the timing for the cremation of Jaitley's mortal remains is yet to be decided.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday described Arun Jaitley as a "valued friend" whose insights and nuanced understanding of matters had "very few parallels" as he condoled the death of the senior BJP leader who was one of his close confidants for decades.

Modi, who is in the UAE on an official tour, said the former finance minister was full of life, blessed with wit, a great sense of humour and charisma.

President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday expressed condolences on the demise of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, saying that his death leaves a huge void in the intellectual ecosystem.

Vice President rushes to Delhi

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday cancelled his visit to Nellore in Andhra Pradesh and is scheduled to rush to Delhi in view of former minister Arun Jaitley's death. No sooner than Naidu boarded a chopper to go to Nellore, about 170 km from here by 12.20 pm, the message on Jaitley's death was conveyed to him and the helicopter, which was then taxiing returned to bay. The Vice President then headed to nearby Raj Bhavan and he is scheduled to take a flight to Delhi soon.

Jaitley was a 'superhuman', says Shivraj Chouhan

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday condoled the demise of former Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

"He was a great man and superhuman. This is not just the loss of BJP, it is the loss for the entire country and the entire world. He devoted his life for the service of the country," he said while talking to reporters here.

Top Congress leaders on Saturday condoled the death of former finance minister Arun Jaitley, with the party saying it was deeply saddened to hear about his demise.

"We are deeply saddened to hear the passing of Shri Arun Jaitley. Our condolences to his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this time of grief," the Congress said.

The party's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, "Saddened to know about the demise of Shri Arun Jaitley. My deepest condolences to his family. An astute parliamentarian, he'll always be remembered. May his soul Rest in Peace."

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said, "Deeply saddened to know of untimely demise of former Union minister and senior BJP leader, Sh Arun Jaitley. My heartfelt condolences to his family members. May God give them strength. May his soul rest in peace."

Sibal, Ahmed Patel remember Jaitley

Noted lawyer and former union minister Kapil Sibal said he has lost an old friend and a dear colleague in Jaitley. "Very sorry to learn that Arun Jaitley is no more . An old friend and a dear colleague will be remembered for his seminal contributions to the polity and as FM of India . As Leader of Opposition he was without match . He always stood steadfastly for his friends and for his party," he said.

Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel said, "Extremely saddened to learn about the demise of Arun ji. In him the nation has a lost an articulate leader and an excellent human being."

Tharoor calls Jaitley's death a great loss for the country

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said Jaitley's death is a great loss for the country. "Deeply saddened by the tragic passing of my friend Delhi Univ senior Arun Jaitley. We first met when he was at DUSU and I was President of St Stephen's College Union. Despite political differences we enjoyed a healthy mutual respect and debated his Budget often in LS. A great loss for India," he tweeted.
