Greater Noida: Maruti Suzuki India Limited on Thursday unveiled the petrol and mild hybrid version of its popular compact sport utility vehicle Vistara Brezza at the Auto Expo 2020.

The petrol variant will come with a 1.5 litre petrol engine.

The car maker, had in 2016, launched the product with only 1.3 litre diesel engine and took on large sports utility vehicle (SUV) manufacturers in the domestic market.

Maruti has decided to stop selling diesel vehicles from 1 April, when the BS-VI norms kick in.

The company is betting big on compressed natural gas-based vehicles and lobbying for a cut in Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The vehicle manufacturer also showcased its Futuro-E electric vehicle concept at the Auto Expo 2020. The is the second consecutive edition in which Maruti has unveiled a concept electric vehicle. The Japanese car maker though is yet to launch a battery-operated electric vehicle in India.

Despite being the market leader in combustion engine vehicles, Suzuki Motor Corp’s most profitable subsidiary has been left behind by the likes of Hyundai Motor Company, Mahindra and Mahindra, Tata Motors Ltd and new entrant MG Motor India Pvt Ltd when it comes to launching electric vehicles.

Hyundai launched its first long range electric sport utility vehicle -- Kona -- in 2019, while MG Motors joined the race with the launch of ZS electric vehicle in January 2020. Both the vehicles are being brought to India in completely knocked down (CKD) form.

According to Kenichi Ayukawa, managing director, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Vitara Brezza created a disruption amongst compact SUVs by offering a new dual-tone design, class leading features, outstanding fuel-efficiency and personalisation options, and quickly emerged as a segment leader.

“Keeping up with its strong, urban and premium appeal, the all-new Vitara Brezza is bolder, sportier and more powerful. We are confident that all-new Vitara Brezza too will continue the legacy with overwhelming customer response," added Ayukawa.
