Business News/ Auto News / Honda secures design patent for CL300 Scrambler Motorcycle in India, safeguarding unique design in local market: Report
Back

Honda has recently obtained a design patent in India for the CL300 scrambler motorcycle, a smaller version of the previously revealed CL500 twin-cylinder model. After its debut at the beginning of this year, the CL300's distinctive design is now protected by intellectual property rights in the Indian market.

According to Autocar India, there are indications that Honda might be considering the launch of the CL300 in our market. The primary advantage lies in the fact that the CL300 benefits from the utilization of a 286cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, which is already available in India through the CB300R street naked motorcycle. However, in the CB300R, the engine produces an additional 5hp. Another point to consider is that in markets where both models are offered, the CL300 tends to have a slightly lower price tag compared to the CB300R.

Despite the CB300R being partially localized in India, enabling Honda to offer it at a competitive price of ₹2.77 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), achieving a comparable pricing for the CL300 would require a similar level of localization. This entails the need for Honda to establish vendor partnerships, procure components, and establish an assembly line specifically for the CL300 in order to ensure a cost-effective production process.

Despite the absence of any official communication from Honda either confirming or dismissing the possibility, there exists a potential for Honda to invest and introduce the CL300 in our market due to the growing popularity of scrambler motorcycles. The decision hinges on Honda's assessment of the market demand and their willingness to make the necessary investment. Ultimately, only time will reveal Honda's course of action.
