Porsche's iconic logo gets a subtle makeover, gets a subtle evolution twist with bold impact
Porsche has updated its iconic logo, refining the bronze knurling and adding a honeycomb pattern. The redesign will roll out on vehicles by 2023. The logo's symbolism includes a shield shape with a horse, representing performance and heritage, and red and black stripes flanking the horse.

Initially introduced on sportscar models in 1952, the logo has undergone several subtle alterations over time, each holding immense importance. The most recent update, although seemingly minute, carries significant meaning.
While still retaining its unmistakable Porsche identity, the revised logo reveals its modifications upon closer examination. The previously textured bronze knurling has been completely refined, enhancing the visibility of the distinctive 'Porsche' and 'Stuttgart' lettering. Additionally, a contemporary touch has been added with the incorporation of a honeycomb pattern, lending the logo a modern allure. The rollout of this updated design will commence on the vehicle side by the end of 2023.
The Porsche logo holds deep symbolism and conveys a multitude of meanings. At its core, the logo is characterized by a shield shape with a prominent starry highlight. Central to the logo is the depiction of a rearing horse, which carries significant associations with automotive performance as well as heritage and traditions. The origins of Porsche in Stuttgart, a city with a rich history dating back to 950 AD, where horse-breeding and stud farms thrived in medieval times, influenced the inclusion of the horse as a tribute to its origins. The posture of the horse also symbolizes the exceptional power, agility, and elegance that are synonymous with Porsche cars and highly admired.
The colors employed in the Porsche logo also hold significance. The presence of red and black stripes flanking the horse is a nod to the traditional crest colors of Württemberg-Hohenzollern. The inclusion of stylized antlers in the logo design was inspired by the coat of arms of the region.
Interstingly, the concept of a Porsche crest originated from the visionary thinking of Max Hoffman, an American car importer. Hoffman envisioned a visually appealing emblem that would establish a distinct identity for the brand and resonate with customers. He successfully persuaded Ferry Porsche, the son of Porsche founder Ferdinand Porsche Sr., to pursue the creation of such a symbol. Subsequently, Ferry Porsche entrusted the task to senior designer Franz Xaver Reimspiess, who was tasked with developing a symbol that encapsulated the essence of the company.
In 1952, the inaugural Porsche logo was proudly displayed on the steering wheel of a Porsche 356. Over time, it migrated to the hubcaps in 1959 and subsequently adorned the hoods of Porsche vehicles starting from 1965. Despite undergoing minor updates throughout its evolution, the essence of the original logo remains discernible. Even the most recent update, introduced as part of the company's 75th anniversary celebrations, stays faithful to the essence of the original logo.
