Tata Motors Ltd on Wednesday commercially launched Altroz, marking the company's foray into the premium hatchback segment. The starting price of Altroz is 5.29 lakh, while the top-end variant XZ-O has been priced at 9.29 lakh.

Altroz is the first product under the auto major’s modular alfa architecture. Senior executives at Tata Motors said the premium hatchback is the fastest growing category within the small car segment.

"Premium hatchback's share has increased from 9% to 26% over the recent years," said Mayank Pareek, president, passenger vehicle business at Tata Motors.

Pareek said the company decided to offer the best in-class features across safety, design and appearance, and driving dynamics, and give customised units as a key strategy to take over competition in the premium hatchback segment. Altroz will primarily compete with Maruti Suzuki's Baleno and Hyundai's i20 models.

"Premium hatchback is an important segment for us. We had to offer superior class defining product," said Pareek.

Altroz also underlines the company's turnaround strategy for its passenger vehicle segment, wherein it plans to launch cars across high selling categories where Tata Motors has been absent so far.

"It is critical to first participate in the high growth categories and increase the company's representation across its portfolio, which has been largely restricted to only 40% of all the overall passenger car market in India," Guenter Butschek, managing director and chief executive at Tata Motors told Mint.
