BRAND POST

Pelorus Technologies, a renowned brand equipping the industry with digital forensics tools and techniques has recently garnered appreciation from Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Mumbai Police Department for setting up zonal cyber labs in Mumbai.

Talking about how their firm is technologically advanced, Pelorus scans the environment to understand the agency’s requirements and suggests the solutions that aid the best. Founder Rahul Dwivedi shares his insights on the latest developments in the Digital Forensics Domain.

Q1. What is your role as System Integrator in the Indian perspective?

Well, we Pelorus Technologies, have tried to be the bridge between Govt./Law Enforcement Agencies and their investigative needs. Before 5-6 years Digital Forensic Market was routine with Law enforcement agencies relying on traditional forensic solutions in their labs.

In our client interactions we realized that there were cases accumulating which required advanced forensic techniques and equipment. Since then we researched global forensic trends, advanced forensic tools/equipment; then we presented these to our Indian law enforcement agencies. We not only availed but also trained Law enforcement agencies with these Advance tools and techniques.

Q2. What is Big Data Analytics?

Talking about - Big Data Analytics, these solutions are currently being used in tracking correlation of large numbers of exhibits involved in a crime. See, some cases like Mob Crimes (Lynching), terrorism investigation, online betting, Group Money laundering, etc involves many players thus many exhibits like mobile phone extractions, Hard disk Extraction, CDR tower Logs, external media, etc.

For their combined investigation to correlate the players of crime using messages, locations, call logs, emails, transferred data; etc Big data Analytics solution is used. Recently we helped investigators to quickly sort findings in their highly sensitive cases by ingesting Tower dumps, Mobile Extractions, Hard disk/USB Images, Email Archives, etc in a single case.

Q3. How Artificial Intelligence is involved with Forensics?

Forensic investigators gain an edge with AI (Artificial Intelligence). It introduces automation, which saves significant time and expense, and allows investigators to focus more on where fraud might occur. It helps companies detect criminal activity from the vast amounts of unstructured data they have collected, such as from videos, images, emails, and text files.

Q4. As we know, the Criminals are also well-versed with technology and they might use AntiForensic techniques to save themselves. Are there any tools to track down “AntiForensics" Activities?

There is no such thing as a perfect crime, not me Sherlock Holmes once said.

Nearly Same thing can be said for Digital Forensics Investigations. In digital forensics, if you have all the arsenal of forensic tools and expertise to Enhance Investigation, then you have the best chance to uncover any hidden traces leading towards perfect evidence of crime. That’s why Concerned Governments are spending a good amount in building Topclass Cyber Forensics Infrastructure.

Q5. What are your major issues or concerns regarding the cyber department of Law enforcement agencies?

The products and systems used in digital forensics are niche and specific, the time taken to gain expertise is relatively more. When we train the personnel well enough to serve the department we often get to see that they have been transferred to some other department. After that, the newly trained staff transferred to the cyber department has to handle new cases. Their training again starts from zero. If the personnel is informed that they will be serving in the same department throughout their lives they will be more committed towards learning and gaining the subject knowledge. I feel if there is a dedicated cyber forensics department and the person can stay there throughout his career will also lead them to strong exposure to cyber forensics and him gaining lots of experience and thus solving cases more effectively. This can be seen in the wireless department where there are internal transfers within the wireless department.

Q6. Apart from hardware and software, how important is training in a successful investigation?

Forensic hardware and software are used to assist investigators in Cyber forensic investigations. The investigator must have good knowledge of Digital Forensics Techniques as well as the Software and hardware used.

Forensics terminology is not very easy. After investigation, the exhibit and evidence should be admissible to court. Any small mistake can make the case inadmissible in court of law.

Training not only gives expertise to the investigators but it also makes sure that investigators are following the correct path during evidence seizure, acquisition, analysis as well as making a case report.

As we discussed, there are many forensic tools for various types of investigations. In each type of case- methodology, technique, required time is different. Hence, to investigate and process cases accurately - It’s very important for investigators to gain training on Software, hardware as well as basics of digital forensics.
