Cloud computing has made a massive impact in today’s business landscape by making it easier for employees to collaborate and share company data seamlessly. It has made businesses more productive and is responsible for an increase in revenue in some cases. However, operating a business on the cloud comes with security risks that cybersecurity professionals have to contend with.

Many companies store sensitive data on the cloud, and this mostly includes the personal information of their customers and clients. Government bodies mandate that they keep this sensitive data secure and away from the prying eyes of cybercriminals. Businesses that do not comply with data privacy regulations risk being sanctioned or forced to pay fines.

Besides the legal implications of non-compliance, companies can also receive backlash from the public and lose potential and existing customers. This is why cloud compliance is crucial to business survival.

Cloud compliance refers to the measures and practices companies use to ensure the assets in their cloud environments are set up according to the provisions in data protection laws, and industry security standards and frameworks from relevant bodies. It differs from cybersecurity protections because the laws, standards, and frameworks already exist and companies have to adhere to them. Meanwhile, companies have to develop their cybersecurity strategy according to their organizational setup and needs.

Cloud compliance applies to all companies that use cloud services, regardless of whether they use in-house infrastructure or third-party service providers. The requirements remain the same in both cases, but the implementation may differ.

Cloud Compliance Components

The cloud compliance requirements that guide each company depend on the industry they operate. However, these are the components that make up cloud compliance in all cases:

Security standards

Most industries have standards that dictate how companies should handle cloud data. These are called cloud security compliance standards and are created by bodies like the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO 27017 and 27018 are two ISO standards that outline the cloud security controls companies should implement when setting up their cloud environment.

Data privacy regulations

Businesses that handle consumers are subject to regulations from state, federal, and international governments. These regulations help define the cloud compliance requirements that companies have to follow. Business owners and cybersecurity professionals must understand and comply with the data privacy regulations that guide companies in their sector.

Cloud governance

Businesses need cloud governance to help them manage which employees can access and perform certain activities within their cloud systems. They can do this by implementing controls and creating policies and guidelines on how to use the cloud system and the data stored on it.

Business owners, managers, and cybersecurity professionals should be aware of the risks of using cloud computing and recognize how cloud compliance can mitigate them. They should also understand their roles and responsibilities in keeping cloud data safe and ensuring they adhere to cloud compliance requirements at all times. These will minimize the frequency of successful cyber attacks and prevent data breaches, thereby building consumer trust and a positive public reputation.
