The average service life of Li-ion batteries used in the EV market is between 8-10 years, which is around 500 to 1,000 charge cycles. The mileage assurance given by EV battery manufacturers is usually between 1,00,000 and 1,60,000 kilometers.
Recently, we have witnessed multiple scenarios of E-bikes catching fire, mostly during standby conditions. On further analysis, it was found that the majority of the battery fires have been due to short circuits caused by improper cell balancing and fluctuating current. Such a significant rise in temperature causes ‘thermal runaway’ and deteriorates the battery life, since the battery cell temperature goes beyond 100°C causing catastrophes such as EV fires in some cases.
The battery management system (BMS) is the right solution to prevent such types of incidents and sudden catastrophes. A smart battery management system enables accurate sensing and deploys cloud technologies for effective cell monitoring and passive load balancing.
The latest EV battery swapping policy draft dated 20th April’22 highlights the need to ensure that the battery is safe and assets are secured. The swappable batteries will employ modern technologies like IoT-based battery management systems. Additional capabilities include remote monitoring, tracking, immobilization capabilities, and other necessary features for control and battery protection.
