As India readies itself for the much-awaited 5G rollout, read on to know what this means for the average consumer. The article also delves into what are the different 5G bands available, which smartphones support these and how you get a 5G-ready handset from Flipkart, India ka smartphone destination

Mobiles phones have become our lifelines in today’s times as we use them to make and receive calls and messages, work using a host of productivity apps, take photos and videos and stay connected via social media, among several other purposes. But, the way we live and communicate is soon going to get completely transformed as India gets 5G ready this year.

In a recent statement, Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that 5G services will be launched in India as early as October 12 this year, after which it will be scaled up in major cities across the country. As part of the Digital India vision, the focus of the government is to offer affordable connectivity in each and every part of the country over the next 2-3 years. Towards this end, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had recently held a spectrum auction, through which it received 17,876 crore from major telecom players.

Telecom operators have announced that the 5G rollout will start soon. As per reports, it will start in 13 cities namely Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune. A wider 5G coverage is expected by 2023.

As several smartphones being sold in the market are already 5G ready, the adoption is expected to gain pace very quickly. Flipkart is one of the best destinations to buy a 5G ready smartphone in India, as it offers a host of options across brands at affordable price points. Flipkart offers unbeatable prices on exchange along with some amazing affordability options like No Cost EMI and Flipkart Pay Later.

What does 5G mean for us?

Cellular networks today are offering the best services to mobile phone users and 5G, or fifth-generation cellular network technology, is expected to redefine the way we life as it opens up endless possibilities, right from high speed internet connectivity with low latency to support new applications such as AI, IoT, virtual reality and cloud gaming efficiently.

4G networks often get congested due to high usage loads and there are instances when we are unable to access networks due to tower congestion. But, 5G networks offer uninterrupted services powered by increased speed and higher bandwidth. Furthermore, 5G connectivity, which has the capacity to deliver 100 times higher capacity compared to 4G, is also expected to offer improved connectivity in densely populated areas like stadiums and convention centres and multiple viewing angles at sports events. It will also help power more innovation in the future with tech-led drone deliveries and creation of smart cities.

Benefits of 5G

Smoother Video Calls- New 5G networks will have even lower latency than 4G LTE, with the round-trip transmission of data taking less than five milliseconds, which essentially means that once 5G is announced in India, your calls to your loved ones won’t be blotchy. Watching your favorite movie in high-resolution would be a much smoother experience

Faster Downloads - You will get faster download speeds and lower latency with this powerful smartphone. Smartphones like iPhone 13, OPPO Reno8 Pro, Nothing Phone (1) ,Motorola Edge 30 Pro among many others support all 8 5G Bands which are getting rolled out in India which lets the phone choose the faster network for downloads!

Smoother Gaming experience- The combination of high speed and minimal lag is perfect for virtual reality and augmented reality games, making your gaming experience more seamless and immersive.

Internet of Things- Moreover, you can connect to 10x more Internet of Things devices like smart TV, speakers etc via your smartphone, thanks to 5G.

What are the different 5G bands available in India?

There are essentially three types of 5G bands supported in India — low-band, mid-band, and high-band (mm Wave) – based on frequency. Simply put, the higher the frequency, the better the speed and shorter the range of the network. Low band waves can travel long distances and penetrate obstacles, as against the High Band which has great speed but is unable to penetrate through objects.

By definition, the low-band frequencies include 600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, and 2500 MHz while the mid-band frequency is 3300 MHz. Lastly, the spectrum also includes a high-band frequency of up to 72 GHz, known as mmWave. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has floated a variety of frequency bands ranging from 600 MHz to up to 72 GHz in which telecom operators have acquired all kinds of frequency bands. But, the mm Wave is not currently supported in India as it requires a specialised infrastructure and antennas.

5Gi is India’s Standard which uses a wider coverage and works in remote and rural areas along with being cost efficient for last mile coverage.

Do I need a new Sim Card to change my network to 5G?

There is a high likelihood that India will use the existing 4G infrastructure, which is a Non Standalone (NSA) 5G network. The reason for this is that building fresh infrastructure for a Standalone (SA) 5G network will take time and require heavy capital investment too.

What are the 8 5G bands across frequencies?

Now, smartphone manufacturers will be advertising the band names such as n28, n5, etc in place of listing the actual 5G frequency that the phone supports in technical terms. As for the bands, the low bands comprise of 700MHz- n28, 800MHz- n5, 900MHz- n8; mid bands of 1800MHz- n3, 2100MHz- n1,2500MHz- n41, (3300 – 3800MHz)- n78, (3300 – 4200MHz)- n77 and High mm Bands of 26GHz (24.25 – 27.5 GHz)- n258.
