PARTNERED

With every passing decade, there are some technologies that completely change the way we work and function. For the last decade, cloud has been one of those transformational technologies. What began as an alternate for back-end storage has now morphed into a platform for business innovation. Enabling on-demand access to resources, flexibility in scaling, cost reduction, and business continuity, the applications of cloud are many.

The cloud story for India is notable for its rise, but more so for its potential. In 2018, India’s cloud market was approximately $2.5 billion, just about 1% of global cloud spends. With the pandemic, the country’s cloud market is expected to more than double in the next two years. The Public Cloud Services (PCS) market including SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS is likely to touch the $7 billion mark by 2024, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Semiannual Public Cloud Services Tracker. Accelerated cloud adoption is turning India into a technology hub and the market is more dynamic than ever.

India’s ripening cloud market

Cloud adoption was in the radar for several Indian enterprises. The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst for these enterprises and made cloud a strategic priority. Add to that the booming start-up ecosystem in the country. Owing to the availability of skilled IT professionals, tech-savvy consumers, and better access to funds, India has become a popular destination for start-ups. Many of these new business models are driving rapid cloud migration.

Enterprises today have accelerated their cloud adoption to unlock greater efficiency, faster innovation, and drive enduring business change at speed and scale, with overall cost optimization in the IT spends. Third-party studies support this. There is no doubt that cloud has emerged as an important ally for organizations, across regions and industries, with remote working and flexible IT models being a necessity today. For example, industries such as finance, media and entertainment, healthcare, and retail, as well as conventional sectors such as education and manufacturing, are fast-tracking its adoption.

Further, spending on public cloud services in India is expected to grow 29.4% to $4.1 billion in 2021 from $3.1 billion in 2020, according to a forecast by Gartner Inc, a US-based research and advisory company. And this accelerated cloud adoption is giving rise to several job opportunities in this field.
