Bharti Airtel’s recently launched WiFi calling feature has registered over a million users already, the company said in a statement on Friday.

The service uses WiFi networks to create a separate channel for voice calls and improves calling experience for customers.

There is no extra charge for making calls via ‘Airtel WiFi Calling’ and customers can access the service on their smartphone without the need for any app or SIM card.

Airtel is the first to make the service live across India and our customers can use the feature on any WiFi," Randeep Sekhon, chief technology officer of Bharti Airtel said.

Over 100 smartphone models across 16 brands are now compatible with Airtel’s latest offering.

Airtel’s Friday announcement comes just two days after its bitter rival Jio launched the same service for its mobile users.

Jio WiFi calling will be enabled pan-India between 7 January and 16 January, and will be compatible with 150 mobile handsets, the company said on Wednesday.

Through this feature, voice and video calls will seamlessly switch-over between VoLTE and WiFi to provide better calling experience.

To be sure, Airtel had in December announced that it had launched this service for its customers in Delhi, Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Kolkata and Andhra Pradesh.
