GREATER NOIDA: French carmaker Renault on Wednesday unveiled a new automatic manual transmission (AMT) variant of its Triber sports utility vehicle (SUV) at the Auto Expo.

The Easy-R AMT version of Triber will be launched in India by June, Renault India managing director and chief executive officer Venkatram Mamillapalle told Mint.

The company did not provide pricing details for the new Triber variant, but earlier models sold in the range of 4.99-6.49 lakh.

"Looking at evolving customer preferences, the AMT technology is becoming a popular choice across segments and we are happy to build our portfolio with the Renault Triber Easy-R AMT," Mamillapalle said.

The first variants of Triber were launched in August 2019, and since then the company has sold over 28,000 units.

The company, known in India for its SUV Duster and hatchback Kwid, also showcased its electric vehicles which are sold internationally, Zoe and K-ZE.

However, the company does not have plans to sell these electric vehicles in India, and would instead build affordable electric vehicles for the Indian market.

"We are not launching Zoe or K-ZE. We are building a new car for India, and that's what we always do, whether it is Duster or Kwid or Triber because (our philosophy is) India First and for India, and that's what we are doing for electric vehicles as well," Mamillapalle said.

Renault had tasted runaway success with its Duster launch model, which had displaced the Scorpio, from the M&M stable, as the best-selling SUV in India for a while. But today it has lost out in the market.

Its Kwid model has been a volumer grosser, but sales have cooled.
