State-owned telecom firms Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) have earned a total of ₹12,984.86 crore from monetisation of land, buildings, tower and fibre since 2019. The Parliament was informed on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, that the telecom majors earned the sum of money from the sale and asset monetisation.
According to data shared by Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar in the Lok Sabha, BSNL has earned ₹2,387.82 crore and MTNL ₹2,134.61 crore up to January 2025 from monetisation of lands and buildings.
"BSNL and MTNL are monetising only those land and building assets which are not required for their own use in the foreseeable future and for which it has the rights to transfer the ownership," Sekhar said in a written reply. BSNL has earned ₹8,204.18 crore and MTNL ₹258.25 crore from monetisation of close assets comprising tower and fibre up to January 2025, as per the reply.
"Monetisation of assets are being done as per approved policy of the govt and its impact on the PSUs are being monitored closely," said Sekhar. The Centre is not privatising BSNL and MTNL, Chandra Sekhar said in reply to a parliament question on Wednesday.
Last month, the government had approved an additional capital expenditure plan of ₹6,982 crore for BSNL. According to reports, the government had approved ₹6,000 crore towards the 4G network expansion of MTNL and BSNL.
BSNL announced its October-December quarter results for fiscal 2024-25 (Q3FY25) on February 14, reporting a net profit of ₹262 crore, marking its return to profitability after almost 17 years. The state-owned telecom services provider swung back to black in the December quarter of FY25 for the first time since 2007, when it last reported a quarterly net profit. BSNL clinched nearly 14-18 per cent growth across mobility, FTTH, and leased line service offerings.
