Jeff Bezos shares video interacting with staff at Amazon India delivery centre

  • Bezos says he is proud of the program Amazon had in India to hire and train deaf associates at its delivery stations
  • The Amazon founder has taken to social media to post actively about his trip in India, a key market for the e-retailer

NEW DELHI : American billionaire Jeff Bezos on Sunday shared another video from his recently concluded trip to India where he is seen interacting with employees at the company’s delivery station in India.

“Proud of the program we have in India to hire and train deaf associates at our delivery stations. Managers learn basic sign language to be able to communicate. Meeting this group was a moving experience for me," Bezos said in a tweet on Sunday evening as he interacted with employees during his three-day visit to India last week.

Bezos, founder of e-commerce giant Amazon—who landed in India mid-last week and announced a slew of investments and efforts to create up to a million jobs in India by 2025—has taken to social media (both Twitter and instagram) to post actively about his trip in India, a key market for the e-retailer.

He is seen immersing in Indian experiences—starting with a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, meeting kirana store owners, and sporting traditional Indian attire even as he faced protests from traders’ associations and battled allegations by India’s competition watchdog.

Bezos’s attempts at playing the swadeshi tune can be seen as efforts put in by the businessman who is trying to woo Indian shoppers, policy makers, and work with small businesses, as he tries to win over the country’s over $795 billion retail market where he now competes with Walmart-backed Flipkart, and homegrown Reliance Industries.

Bezos’s trip in India commenced with a visit to Raj Ghat memorial located in the capital ahead of the online retailer's two-day summit for small and medium businesses held in Delhi last week. This was followed by posts on Twitter and Instagram that showed Bezos flying kites with kids in Delhi, to taking a selfies in a hall packed with sellers at the event in Delhi.

Bezos even posted about a delivery he made to a small neighborhood store in the city of Mumbai last week as he announced investments to to tune of $1 billion in digitizing small and medium business here.

“Amazon partners with thousands of kirana stores all over India as delivery points. It’s good for customers, and it helps the shop owners earn additional income. Got to visit one in Mumbai. Thank you, Amol, for letting me deliver a package," he posted on Twitter on January 18.

Later he was also seen in Mumbai meeting the country’s top industrialists and business executives such as Mukesh Ambani, Kishore Biyani, N.R. Narayan Murthy, Adi Godrej, Suresh Naraynan, among others.

Bezos even had a night out in Bollywood—where he mingled with Bollywood celebrities such as Shah Rukh Khan and Zoya Akhtar. At the event, Bezos said that the company' streaming platform Amazon Prime Video is doing better in India than anywhere else in the world.
