MUMBAI: Construction giant Larsen & Turbo Ltd (L&T) has set aside ₹500 crore per month to support its 1,60,000 contract workers amid reports of exodus of migrant workers for their homes during the 21-day lockdown.
The contract workers are being paid their wages and are provided with basic amenities at their labour camps, "...while maintaining the COVID-19 prevention and containment protocol", said L&T in the press statement.
The company said it has maintained hygiene and waste management, and initiated catering and preventive measures such as social distancing at the labour camps.
The commitment from a corporate comes amid the exodus of migrant workers from constructions sites in metros such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bengaluru following concerns over payments, food and accommodation.
"We are helping India's fight against COVID-19 by way of immediate funding and through a range of welfare initiatives including converting our training schools into isolation centres," said AM Naik, Group Chairman, L&T.
L&T has announced a donation of ₹150 crore towards PM CARES Fund, set up to fight the covid-19 pandemic.
The company is also remitting wages to workmen and contractors into their bank accounts.
