New Delhi: E-commerce retailer Snapdeal said it has witnessed a surge in sales of digital gift cards during this year’s festive season sale. When compared with last year, there has been a 300% jump in sales of these gift cards. The cards are more popular in the big cities, with 3 of 4 cards sold being purchased by people in metros.

Snapdeal has put together a vast range of digital gift cards, which can be used both online and in physical stores of leading brands. Most of these gift cards are valid for one year, and gives users ample opportunity to increase their total discounts by clubbing them with the many online and offline sales that will happen over the next few months. Users also prefer the convenience since the cards are sent instantly over email, with the option to add gift messages for the recipient.

According to a Snapdeal spokesperson, “These gift cards are a popular choice with metro buyers, who use them both for themselves and also as gift options. Young adults prefer gift cards to cash gifts. The purchase of gift cards is expected to increase with festivals like Karva Chauth, Diwali, and Bhai Dooj happening later this month."

The Uber Gift Card, for instance, offers a 10% saving on Uber Rides and Uber Eats and is one of the most popular buys on the platform.

Similarly, the demand for MakeMyTrip’s gift card for 10% discount on all hotel and flight bookings, and a 10% discount card from BookMyForex for forex purchases, indicates the growing trend of traveling among Indians.

Gift cards from Gap, Nautica & Aeropostale offer a tempting 22% discount. Discount cards by other leading fashion brands like Levis (10%), Flying Machine (15%), Allen Solly (7%), and Zivame (5%) on their entire collection are also popular with metro users.

To make the most of ongoing sales, Snapdeal has an 8% discount card offer for Urban Ladder, which can be used both online and in the physical stores. Homecentre and Lifestyle offer a flat 6% discount.

For entertainment lovers, Snapdeal is offering an option of saving more with the BookMyShow 10% discount card. Imagica has a 12% discount, while users can buy gift cards to save 10% on orders with Dominos and 15% with KFC.

Other popular digital goodies are Google Play Gift cards offering up to 25% savings on downloads.

This is the first leg of Snapdeal’s three mega festive sale offers and will be live till 6 October. The next two sales will run in the second and third weeks of October. The sale aims at offering special deals on a wide range of its bestsellers from Indian bazaars, including products for home, fashion and fitness.

Snapdeal has more than 500,000 registered sellers on the marketplace.
