The threat of coronavirus has spread to Barcelona, Spain. The MWC 2020, that is scheduled to begin on 24 February, has seen numerous withdrawals from major tech companies. Amazon, Sony, Vivo and other tech giants are going to skip the biggest tech event in the world due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, Xiaomi has come forward and confirmed that the company will not only be taking part in the event, but also stick to its original schedule.
The company said in a statement, "With the continuing spread of the novel coronavirus pneumonia, we would like to inform our fans, media friends, partners and users that the health and safety of everyone is a top priority for all of us at Xiaomi."
The statement further added, "we will attend Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2020 as planned, and launch our latest smartphones as well as a range of smart hardware."
In order to counter the growing fears, the Chinese company will be taking decisive measures to prevent any sort of infections. The people presenting at the company’s booth will be sourced from their European offices. The employees will also be checked for symptoms 14 days prior to the event.
The devices at Xiaomi’s booth will also be disinfected on a frequent basis. Senior executives from China who will take part in the event will also be under watch for 14 days before joining the rest of the team in Spain.
Xiaomi will be globally launching the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro on February 23, one day before the MWC begins. At least one of the two smartphones will be getting a 108MP lens. The company will be revealing the device in China on 23 February.
As the event start date gets closer, tech companies are coming forward to announce their withdrawal. The latest in this list of companies is Intel and Vivo. A statement from the smartphone manufacturer said, "Vivo has been closely monitoring the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (NCP) outbreak and continuously evaluating planned activities. The health and safety of our employees and the public are our top priority. Based on the present situation, we have decided to withdraw from our debut at MWC 2020 and other related events later this month in Barcelona, Spain."
MWC organizer, GSMA has put out a list of requirements that need to be followed at the event. They have completely banned people coming from China’s Hubei province, where coronavirus has claimed the maximum number of lives.
