Zomato announced on Thursday, February 6, 2025, that it would rename the company “Eternal Ltd” more than two years after it began using the new name internally. The leading food and grocery delivery giant informed in a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges that the company's board approved the change of name from ‘Zomato Ltd’ to ‘Eternal Ltd’ on Thursday.
According to Zomato's stock exchange filing, the name change is subject to the approval of the company's shareholders, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and other applicable statutory authorities, as required. However, the brand name and app of the food delivery business, Zomato, will remain the same.
The name change marks a significant transformation in Zomato's corporate identity. Deepinder Goyal, Founder and CEO of Zomato, also announced the change on the microblogging platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) on Thursday by posting a formal announcement letter about the development.
“Our board has approved this change today and I request our shareholders to also support this change. If and when it is approved, our corporate website will transition from zomato.com to eternal.com. We will also change our stock ticker,” said Deepinder Goyal in the letter to shareholders.
The decision, approved by the company's Board, reflects Zomato's evolution beyond food delivery, with businesses like Blinkit, District, and Hyperpure now playing a crucial role in its future. Eternal will comprise its four major businesses: food delivery vertical Zomato, quick-commerce unit Blinkit, live events business/ B2B logistics unit District, and the kitchen supplies unit Hyperpure.
"When we acquired Blinkit, we started using "Eternal" (instead of Zomato) internally to distinguish between the company and the brand/app. We also thought that we would publicly rename the company to Eternal the day something beyond Zomato became a significant driver of our future. Today, with Blinkit, I feel we are there. We want to rename Zomato Ltd, the company (not the brand/app), to Eternal Ltd," Goyal stated in the letter.
Goyal shared his reflections on the company's journey in a heartfelt message. He recalled how Zomato—originally launched as Foodiebay in 2007—had its humble beginnings as a simple website for uploading restaurant menus.
Over the years, the company defied the odds to become India's first tech startup to be listed on the BSE Sensex, a moment he described as a source of pride and responsibility. "This journey has created tremendous wealth -- not just for me, but for our employees, institutional investors, and retail shareholders. But I did not start Zomato to make money. I started it because I wanted to do something worthwhile with my life," Goyal stated.
The decision to rename Zomato stems from the company's broader vision of building an enduring institution that lasts beyond its current leadership. "We shape our institutions, and then they shape us," he said, emphasizing that Eternal is more than just a name change—it represents a mission statement.
According to the letter, with Blinkit emerging as a major growth driver alongside its core food delivery business, the leadership felt that the time was right for rebranding to encapsulate the company's expanding portfolio.
“Eternal is a powerful name, and to be honest, it scares me to my core. It is a tall order to live up to. Because ‘Eternal’ carries both a promise and a paradox. True permanence isn’t built on bold claims of invincibility or the swagger of success. It is forged in the quiet understanding that our immortality stems from our mortality — because the day we think we will last forever simply because we declare it, we begin our end,” said Goyal in his letter.
"To work at Eternal will be to wake up every day knowing that our forever is earned in moments of self-doubt, in acknowledging our limitations, in our constant hunger to be better than we were yesterday," he noted. Following shareholder approval, the company will transition its corporate website from zomato.com to eternal.com and change its stock ticker from ZOMATO to ETERNAL.
"A company has multiple founding moments, and I hope this change is another one in our journey into the future," Goyal concluded in the letter to shareholders. The move marks a shift for the company, from when investors were sceptical about Zomato's acquisition of Blinkit in mid-2022 to the quick commerce-led growth drawing increasing investor interest.
