Cost of Living highlights December 4: The high rate of inflation has pushed up the cost of living across the globe, burning a hole in the common man's pocket. In some relief, India's retail inflation witnessed a notable decline in September, dropping to a three-month low.

Cost of Living highlights December 4: The cost of living is basically the amount of money one needs to survive in a given place – and one's most essential needs such as food, water, housing, taxes, cost of commute, healthcare, etc. The high rate of inflation has pushed up the cost of living across the globe, burning a hole in the common man's pocket. Since the Russia-Ukraine war broke out, the cost of raw materials and commodities has gone up. This has increased India's payments outgo for oil, gold, and other commodities.

Fuelled by rising food inflation, the retail inflation for agricultural labourers and rural workers increased marginally to 7.08 per cent and 6.92 percent in October, respectively, from 6.70 percent and 6.55 percent respectively in September 2023, said the labour ministry in a statement on Monday.

Food inflation stood at 8.42 percent and 8.18 percent for the Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labourer (CPI-AL) and Consumer Price Index for Rural Labourer (CPI-RL) in October 2023 compared to 8.06 percent and 7.73 percent respectively in September 2023. The values of CPI-AL and CPI-RL came in at 7.05 percent and 7.00 percent respectively during the corresponding month of the previous year.

Govt plans to introduce cashless treatment of accident victims

The ministry of road transport and highways plans to roll out the facility of cashless medical treatment of road accident victims across the country in three to four months.

“Free and cashless medical treatment to accident-injured victims is part of the amended Motor Vehicle Act 2019 (MVA2019). Some states have implemented it but now the Ministry of Roads in league with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will be fully implementing it across the nation," road transport and highways secretary Anurag Jain said.

Crime against women: 4.45 lakh FIRs filed in 2022, almost 51 every hour. Delhi tops the list

According to the annual crime report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Delhi registered the highest rate of crime against women in the country in 2022. The national capital recorded 14,247 cases in 2022 with a rate of 144.4 (per lakh), which was way above the national average of 66.4. The crime against women in the national capital stood at 14,277 in 2021 and 10,093 in 2020, reported PTI. Read more here

Kerala: Consumer forum says poorly printed bill is a violation of consumer rights

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) in Ernakulam, Kerala has said that issuing poorly printed bills or receipts is a violation of consumer rights and is unfair trade practice.

In a directive issued in July 2019, the Kerala State Department of Consumer Affairs mandated that all government, public, and private entities must provide bills that are both legible and durable, said the DCDRC.

Delhi consumer court orders post office to pay ₹15,000 fine for failing to maintain customer's KYC details 

A consumer court in Delhi has ordered the post office at Mayur Vihar, Delhi to pay   15,000 to a customer for failing to update his know your customer (KYC) details on their system.

The matter came to light after a cheque issued by the customer was dishonoured due to the absence of his signature details on the bank's database.

The District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (DCDRC), Delhi noted that the information was provided years ago by the customer when he opened the bank account.

Gold rate today at all-time high on US Fed rate cut bets

Gold rate today: On account of US Fed rate cut buzz after Jerome Powell's speech, gold price today ascended above $2,100 levels and hit a new life-time high of $2,146 per ounce levels in early morning session in Asian stock market.
