NEW DELHI : The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has emerged as a driving force in transforming government procurement, with “remarkable figures" to underscore its success, Ajit Bhalchandra Chavan, Additional CEO of GeM SPV, department of commerce said at the Mint Public Policy Summit on Friday.
GeM has a user-base of 68,636 government buyers, offering access to over 3.1 million products and connecting with a vast network of 6.2 mn sellers and service providers. The platform stands as an example of inclusivity, involving over 150,000 women entrepreneurs who are driving economic empowerment through their participation.

GeM’s operational scale is equally impressive. It receives a staggering 35,000 queries per second, and processes over 50,000 digitally or electronically signed documents daily. GeM handles over 1,000 user authentication requests and more than 250 OTP validations per minute, ensuring secure transactions. The platform’s commitment to user satisfaction is evident in the volume of interactions it manages. This level of engagement is a testament to GeM’s dedication to maintaining effective and transparent communication channels with its users, he said. Citing a World Bank study, he highlighted that greater competition through GeM leads to significant savings, with an overall savings rate of 9.75%. Furthermore, every additional bidder increases the savings rate by 0.55%, underscoring the positive impact of the platform on government expenditure.
