World Environment Day: Here's how businesses can reduce their carbon footprint

The carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment, and in particular climate change.

As the impact of climate change and environmental disruption of sustained economic growth have created ripples among governments and global authorities, companies have witnessed new challenges to transition into sustainable businesses. This involves offsetting carbon emissions, reducing non-biodegradable sources, shifting to cleaner energy, among others.

The latest climate report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said that businesses have a crucial role to play in changing the course of the planet’s future. There are several ways a supply chain company can reduce its carbon footprint and viewing supply chain through an environmental lens is the need of the hour for businesses and manufacturers.

Firstly, businesses can reduce their carbon emissions by breaking down their emissions into three categories:
-direct emissions from business activities
-emissions from the energy purchased
-indirect emissions associated with supply chain, value chain and end user.

Also, tactics such as recycling paper, using web-based communications, and reducing air travel will help a supply chain business become a net zero carbon company. Also, putting different bins for various recyclables around the workplace can encourage employees to think about how they dispose their waste at work.

Another quick and simple way for businesses to reduce their carbon footprint is to switch to a green or renewable energy tariff. Most energy suppliers offer green energy tariffs or contracts which means the energy used is matched with the amount the supplier buys from renewable energy sources.

The greater number of businesses which sign up, the more renewable energy is fed back to the grid. This renewable energy could be sourced from solar farms, hydroelectric power, and biomass plants.

Meanwhile, NITI Aayog CEO B V R Subrahmanyam on Friday said that India has been trying to give a push to circular economy as there is a huge potential for recycling of electronic waste.

Subrahmanyam while addressing an event organised by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) also noted that India is extremely dependent on import of lithium and rare earth, key components in many electronic devices and various industrial applications, including medical technology, aerospace and defence.

MeitY has transferred cost effective Li-ion battery recycling technology to nine recycling industries and startups as part of the Mission LiFE under 'Promote circularity campaign'.

This technology was developed under the Centre of Excellence on E-waste management set up at the Centre for Material for Electronics Technology (C-MET), Hyderabad in collaboration with the government of Telangana along with industry partner Greenko Energies Pvt Ltd.
