IIT Madras topples IISc Bangalore as best educational institute in India
- In the management education category, IIM Bangalore toppled IIM Ahmedabad to be the best B-school of India
- Among universities, IISc Bangalore was judged best, followed by JNU in New Delhi and BHU in Varanasi
New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras, (IIT Madras) has emerged as the best educational institute in India, ahead of Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (IISc Bangalore), the union government said in a fresh university rankings report.
IIT Delhi, IIT Powai in Mumbai and IIT Khargpur, respectively, rounded up the top five, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released by President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday.
“The national ranking aims to measure the excellence of Indian institutions and create a sense of competition among colleges and universities to improve quality,” higher education secretary R. Subrahmanyam said. An increasing number of institutions are participating in the survey to improve their credibility in the market place.
About 3,200 colleges and universities participated in the exercise.
The rankings were declared in nine categories—including engineering, management and medine—and overall all institutions.
In the management education category, IIM Bangalore toppled IIM Ahmedabad to be the best B-school of India. IIM Calcutta came in third.
Several private B-school ranked in the Top 20, including XLRI Jamshedpur (7th), MDI Gurgaon (12th) and SP Jain Mumbai (16). Great Lakes Institute of Management in Chennai (18) and Symbiosis Institute of Business (20) also found a place in the ranking.
Among universities, IISc Bangalore was judged best, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, Banaras Hindu University (BHU, University of Hyderabad and Calcutta University.
“We have done well in the rankings and believe that such national rankings does help in improving your credibility. But we also feel that unique characteristics of institutions should also be respected. For example, a university specialising in liberal arts may not be pitted against a pure science university,” said Pradip Ghosh, pro vice-chancellor of the Jadhavpur University in West Bengal, which was ranked six in the university category.
The ranking is done on the basis of teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
“In our country, recent expansion in higher education has widened access & improved equity. Even so, quality remains a concern," said Kovind while releasing the rankings.
"While there are islands of excellence, both in the public and private sectors, overall standards are uneven. As India’s higher education infrastructure continues to grow, and as enrollment rises, it is important to lift the bar.
"A nuanced approach is essential to ensure that higher education not only fulfills individual aspirations, but also achieves national goals and priorities,” he added.
The president also asked the institutions and authorities to improve women enrollment at higher educational institutions.
