A day after polling for assembly elections in Delhi, incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stoked a controversy by raising concerns over the delay in releasing final voting percentage. Seventy assembly segments in Delhi went to poll on Saturday and results will be announced on Tuesday.

"Absolutely shocking. What is EC doing? Why are they not releasing poll turnout figures, several hours after polling?," Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi chief minister and AAP national convener said on Twitter on Sunday afternoon.

According to the official Voter Turnout app by Election Commission (EC) as of 5PM on Sunday, turnout figure stood at 61.85%. The EC and the Delhi CEO (Chief Electoral Officer) are however yet to issue an official announcement on what are the final turnout figure for elections.

During a press conference on late Saturday evening, Delhi CEO Ranbir Singh had cited tentative figures saying that an update would be communicated after the tabulation of final figures.

"We are expecting the final figures to get released by late evening by the office of Delhi CEO," a senior EC official said requesting anonymity on Sunday afternoon.

AAP has raised its concerns however saying that Commission had submitted final figures in lesser time for Lok Sabha polls and for other larger states compared to Delhi.

"It is for the first time that the Election Commission has failed to give a figure of the turnout. There are elections with more seats that happen. This means that there is something wrong happening. We have fought this election on our work. EVM's (electronic voting machines) are being carted around without any security," Sanjay Singh, Rajya Sabha member and AAP Delhi election in-charge said.

Delhi has seen considerably high turnout over the last two assembly elections including in 2013 it was 65.63%. Less than nine months ago, when Delhi voted for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, it had clocked a turnout of 60.6%. For the previous assembly elections, in 2008 the turnout was 57.58%, in 2003 it was 53.42%, in 1998 it was 48.99% and in 1993 it was at 61.75%.

Delhi CEO is expected to hold a press conference at 7PM on Sunday where more clarity is expected over turnout figures.
