Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday alleged that leaders of Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) were involved with real estate mafia in Maharashtra and the union government and state government had worked to break this nexus in the last five years.

Speaking at a public meeting in Panvel, Maharashtra, Modi said that Maharashtra will play a major role in making India a five trillion dollar economy in the coming days. PM also urged people to take initiative for water conservation.

“Before 2014, builder mafia was prevalent in Maharashtra and Congress and NCP leaders have not been able to wash the stains of nexus between builder mafia and politicians. But now the government has a policy that we will end mafiagiri, mafia will not be spared. We are taking steps to strengthen real estate sector so that it can provide homes to youth and also jobs,” said Modi during a public meeting.

Modi said that the combination of Narendra in Delhi and Devendra in Mumbai was working as a double engine of growth not just for Maharashtra but also India. PM said that Maharashtra had gained from the infrastructure growth and foreign direct investment in the country.

“India is solving all its challenges. We are working for building New India and it is important to build New Maharashtra. National security and good governance were the two most important responsibilities of a government. The government works for the upliftment of financially and socially weaker sections,” Modi added.

During the day, PM also campaigned in Akola where he questioned that why the previous governments in the state had allowed people involved acts of terror to escape. Modi said that people questioning the link between abrogation of Article 370 and Maharashtra elections should not be spared.

“At one time, there were regular incidents of terrorism and hatred in Maharashtra. The culprits got away, and settled in different countries. India wants to ask the people who were in power then, how did all of this happen? How did they escape?” Modi said.
