Karnataka Assembly Elections 2023: Congress crosses majority mark, set to form govt

Karnataka Assembly Elections 2023: The Congress returned to power on its own in Karnataka after 10 years, knocking the BJP off its only southern perch on Saturday as voters decisively backed the grand old party desperately seeking electoral revival ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The Congress has officially crossed the majority mark and now stands poised to sweep the Karnataka Assembly elections. As per data shared by the Election Commission, the party has already won 131 seats and is leading in 5 others.

Meanwhile the BJP saw a sharp from in its tally from the previous election, securing a mere 65 seats. The JD(S) which had hoped to be kingmaker secured a scant 19 seats - down from 37 last time.

“The poor defeated crony capitalists in Karnataka. What I really liked about this election is that we did not fight the battle with hatred. We fought the elections with love…Karnataka mein Nafrat ki bazaar band hui hai, Mohabbat ki dukaane khuli hai," exulted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Celebrations began early in the day as EC trends indicated that the Congress was headed for an absolute majority.

While this is the second time in six months that the Congress has wrested a state away from the BJP - it is a somewhat bigger feat than earlier. This is the first time since the 2019 Lok Sabha polls that the Opposition party has managed to get the better of the BJP in a big state. Coming ahead of several state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the result is likely to energise its battered ranks. It coul also serve as a template for taking on the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

Congress leaders also dismissed assertions about the rift between Sachin Pilot and Ashok Gehlot being a pressure point.

“I accept that there are differences that need to be resolved at the earliest. It (the differences between Sachin Pilot and CM Gehlot) will be resolved firmly. We fought unitedly in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and will do the same in Rajasthan," said Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa - Congress's in-charge of Rajasthan.
